We are proud to announce that two Niles Middle School Robotics teams have qualified for the Ohio Invention Convention State Competition after an outstanding performance at the regional level on May 12, 2025. Both teams tied for third place, earning them the opportunity to present their innovative projects at the state level this summer.
The Invention Convention challenges students to identify real-world problems and develop original solutions, combining STEM knowledge with creativity, collaboration, and presentation skills.
One NMS team — Dawn Jones, Aurora Lutz, and Clarissa Morris — created the "Flock Lock", a remote-controlled, electronic retractable fence designed to help individuals with mobility limitations safely guide chickens into their coop at night. The device is activated via a smartphone app and blends accessibility with agricultural needs in a thoughtful, tech-forward solution.
The second team — Logan Adkins, Faith Bionci, Nicholas Logan, and Tyler Scott — designed the "Cloth Catcher", a modified vacuum tool that helps individuals with back issues pick up clothing without bending. Their device collects clothing into a mesh bag, which can then be emptied directly into a washing machine.
The state competition will be held virtually in June. Both teams have been invited to present their inventions in-person at the state showcase to be held at the COSI Museum in Columbus July 19.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, innovative thinking, and dedication. We look forward to cheering them on as they represent Niles Middle School at the state level!
